In order to stop the release of untreated sewage\u00a0and achieve PCB compliance, an Aquatron\u00ae solid-liquid separator along with a simple water treatment\u00a0plant and ozonator were installed at the hospital on September 3rd 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_7\">The Aquatron\u00ae unit\u00a0completely removes faecal solids from wastewater and thereby enables straight-forward treatment of\u00a0separated flushing water and other grey water. The total project cost was about Rs 6.2 lakhs and the\u00a0monthly operating cost works out to about Rs 5,000. This includes all media refills for the filters as well\u00a0as all power consumption for the ozonator and one pump. There are no separate operator charges. The\u00a0test results for outlet water from Konark\u2019s Aquatron\u00ae-based STP are within the PCB parameter limits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-20.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3277\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-20.jpg\" alt=\"Underground setup next to the blue shed.\" width=\"460\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-20.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-20-300x272.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hospital building along with all plumbing were at least 10 years old so Aquatron\u00ae had to be<br \/>\nretrofitted and an underground space had to be created to house the required tanks.<br \/>\nAs the first step, toilet locations and the existing pipe layout were analyzed and the optimal way to<br \/>\nconnect the toilets to Aquatron\u00ae was decided. Dimensions of the composting chamber and settling tank<br \/>\nwere determined according to daily usage data received from the hospital.<br \/>\nAll 19 toilets in the property are now connected to a single Aquatron\u00ae unit which separates faecal solids<br \/>\nfor natural decomposition in a 2400-liter bio-chamber. The bio-chamber was dimensioned for up to 100<br \/>\nresidential users.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3281 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-21.jpg\" alt=\"Aquatron Sewage Treatment Plant:\" width=\"1384\" height=\"648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-21.jpg 1384w, https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-21-300x140.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-21-1024x479.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-21-768x360.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1384px) 100vw, 1384px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Under the bio-chamber<\/strong>, there is an 8700-liter settling tank (see diagram on previous page), consisting of<br \/>\nthree compartments separated by baffle walls. The settling tank is used to collect all grey water as well<br \/>\nas separated water from Aquatron\u00ae. Ozonation takes place in the last compartment of the settling tank.<br \/>\nAfter ozonation, the water is further polished with an AMF, ACF, MCF and bag filter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The execution<\/strong> had three phases: Underground space and tank construction, plumbing work and water<br \/>\ntreatment plant installation (together with the protective shed).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-27.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3297\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-27.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"797\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-27.jpg 822w, https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-27-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-27-768x551.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 797px) 100vw, 797px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Underground space and tanks<\/strong><br \/>\nThe 3m x 3m x 3m underground room together with all tanks, plastering, waterproofing and slabs took<br \/>\nabout 15 working days to complete for one mason and two helpers. This is excluding the curing time for<br \/>\nthe top slab. The below series of images should illustrate the construction process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plumbing<\/strong><br \/>\nModifications to existing plumbing and new plumbing took totally 30 working days to complete. This<br \/>\nmainly involved diversion of the existing WC downtakes to Aquatron, creating new grey water lines,<br \/>\nconnections from the settling tank to the water treatment plant and pipework within the water<br \/>\ntreatment plant. There was an existing underground pipe with manholes leading out to the municipal<br \/>\ndrain so instead of letting the downtakes enter that, the relevant pipes were cut and a new pipe without<br \/>\nmanholes was drawn along the wall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Installation of Water Treatment Plant and Ozonator<\/strong><br \/>\nTo complement the removal of faecal matter by Aquatron\u00ae and provide a sufficient treated water for<br \/>\nlatest NGT standard, a water treatment plant with an activated media filter, activated carbon filter, bag<br \/>\nfilter, micron cartridge filter, ultrafiltration plant and UV was installed at first. However, the UF plant<br \/>\nwas unable to cope with the heavy chemical and biological demand of the hospital. As a measure to<br \/>\nprovide a permanent, problem-free solution, a 5mg ozonator was installed and the UF setup was<br \/>\nremoved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-22.jpg\" alt=\" Installation of Water Treatment Plant and Ozonator\" width=\"829\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-22.jpg 787w, https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-22-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-22-768x368.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 829px) 100vw, 829px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Project costs<\/strong><br \/>\nThe total cost for the client came up to approximately Rs 6 lakhs, out of which Rs 2 lakhs was civil work<br \/>\nand Rs 4 lakhs was for equipment, plumbing etc. miscellaneous costs.<br \/>\nThe CAPEX cost for the entire project is about 70% of the cost of conventional MBBR STP equipment for<br \/>\na similar site. MBBR technology requires larger tanks for aeration as well as for collection of sludge and<br \/>\ntreated water, which imply a higher cost of civil work. Apart from this, conventional systems need<br \/>\nfrequent equipment maintenance and repairs and often a specialist operator too.<br \/>\nIn regard to the operating costs, the monthly power bill for the Aquatron\u00ae-based system is about Rs<br \/>\n3000 which covers both the ozone generator and the pump. Other operating expenses consist of ACF<br \/>\nmedia replacement at an annual cost of Rs 12,000, 12 MCF filter replacements at an annual cost of Rs<br \/>\n5000 and bag filter refills at an annual cost of Rs 2000. Taking into account occasional cleaning of the<br \/>\nunderground space, the total monthly maintenance cost works out to Rs 3000 or so<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-24.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-24.jpg\" alt=\"Annual O &amp; M costs for Aquatron\u00ae-based STP at Konark Hospitals\" width=\"686\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-24.jpg 799w, https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-24-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-24-768x475.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 686px) 100vw, 686px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Water test results<\/strong><br \/>\nThe treated outlet water was tested for all the PCB parameters as follows:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-26.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-26.jpg\" alt=\"Water test results Aquatron based STP at Konark Hospitals\" width=\"706\" height=\"765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-26.jpg 658w, https:\/\/www.aquatron.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-26-277x300.jpg 277w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>SUMMARY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Aquatron\u00ae-based sewage treatment system at Konark Hospitals was commissioned on September 3 rd 2019 in order to achieve PCB compliance and put an end to releasing 13 KL of untreated wastewater into the public drain every day. The Aquatron\u00ae separator eliminates the need to treat faecal solids by separating them from wastewater for direct, natural decomposition. Hence, the entire wastewater<br \/>\n(separated flushing water and grey water) can be treated by using only an ozonator, AMF and ACF instead of a much heavier conventional STP setup. By the date of this report, about 4 months from commissioning, the decomposition of faecal matter has been as expected and the filtration process has yielded the required water quality as evidenced by the lab test certificates.<br \/>\nThe project took a total of 15 days of civil work, 30 days of plumbing work and 5 days of WTP installation work to complete.<br \/>\nBoth the capital expenditure as well as operational expenditure were lower than for a conventional STP of a similar capacity: the system cost Rs 6 lakhs including all civil, labour and materials whereas the cost of a conventional STP would be in excess of Rs 10 lakhs.
